Interesting facts

Oktoberfest began on 12 October 1810 as the public celebration of Crown Prince Ludwig's wedding to Princess Therese. The grounds are still called Theresienwiese — "Therese's meadow" — in her honour.

Despite the name, most of Oktoberfest happens in September. Organisers moved it earlier in the calendar so visitors could enjoy warmer evenings.

Only six breweries may serve beer at Oktoberfest — Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu, Löwenbräu, Paulaner and Spaten. All must brew within Munich's city limits.

The festival opens only when Munich's mayor taps the first keg at noon on the first Saturday and shouts "O'zapft is!" Not a drop is served before that.

More than six million visitors typically attend across 16 days, drinking several million litres of beer served exclusively in one-litre glass steins called a Mass.

Do’s and Don’ts

Do reach the tents before 11 am on weekends — seats fill fast and big tents close entry once full.

Do carry cash (euros). Many tents and food stalls still prefer cash over cards.

Do try the vegetarian classics — Käsespätzle (cheese noodles), giant pretzels, Obatzda cheese dip and roasted almonds keep vegetarian Indians well fed.

Do tip your server ₹100–200 worth (€1–2) per stein. It keeps the beer coming and is expected etiquette.

Do book your Munich hotel 4–6 months ahead. Prices double or triple during the festival.

Do keep a light jacket handy. September evenings in Munich can drop below 10°C.

Don't stand on tables or take the stein home as a souvenir — both can get you fined or ejected.

Don't expect to order food or beer without a seat. Tent service works only at tables, so guard your spot.

Don't bring large bags or backpacks. Security restricts bags larger than 3 litres at the entrances.

Don't plan tight onward travel on the opening or closing weekend. Trains and airports run packed.

Don't drink on an empty stomach. Oktoberfest beer is stronger than regular Indian lagers — around 6% alcohol.
