Oktoberfest — Travel Guide

Sixteen days of beer, brass bands and Bavarian joy — the world's biggest party awaits.

Every autumn, Munich throws a party so big the whole world shows up. Oktoberfest 2026 runs from 19 September to 4 October on the Theresienwiese, a vast fairground in the heart of the city. Inside enormous tents that seat thousands, brass bands play while servers carry six one-litre steins at a time. Outside, giant ferris wheels and roller coasters light up the evening sky. Here is the surprise — entry is completely free. You walk in, soak up the energy and pay only for what you eat and drink. Locals arrive in lederhosen and dirndls, strangers link arms and sing, and by sunset the whole ground hums like a giant Indian wedding. For Indian travellers, this is the easiest big-ticket festival in Europe to plan. One city, one Schengen visa and direct flights from Delhi put you at the centre of a 200-year-old celebration that more than six million people attend.

Interesting facts

Oktoberfest began on 12 October 1810 as the public celebration of Crown Prince Ludwig's wedding to Princess Therese. The grounds are still called Theresienwiese — "Therese's meadow" — in her honour.

Despite the name, most of Oktoberfest happens in September. Organisers moved it earlier in the calendar so visitors could enjoy warmer evenings.

Only six breweries may serve beer at Oktoberfest — Augustiner, Hacker-Pschorr, Hofbräu, Löwenbräu, Paulaner and Spaten. All must brew within Munich's city limits.

The festival opens only when Munich's mayor taps the first keg at noon on the first Saturday and shouts "O'zapft is!" Not a drop is served before that.

More than six million visitors typically attend across 16 days, drinking several million litres of beer served exclusively in one-litre glass steins called a Mass.

Do’s and Don’ts

Do reach the tents before 11 am on weekends — seats fill fast and big tents close entry once full.

Do carry cash (euros). Many tents and food stalls still prefer cash over cards.

Do try the vegetarian classics — Käsespätzle (cheese noodles), giant pretzels, Obatzda cheese dip and roasted almonds keep vegetarian Indians well fed.

Do tip your server ₹100–200 worth (€1–2) per stein. It keeps the beer coming and is expected etiquette.

Do book your Munich hotel 4–6 months ahead. Prices double or triple during the festival.

Do keep a light jacket handy. September evenings in Munich can drop below 10°C.

Don't stand on tables or take the stein home as a souvenir — both can get you fined or ejected.

Don't expect to order food or beer without a seat. Tent service works only at tables, so guard your spot.

Don't bring large bags or backpacks. Security restricts bags larger than 3 litres at the entrances.

Don't plan tight onward travel on the opening or closing weekend. Trains and airports run packed.

Don't drink on an empty stomach. Oktoberfest beer is stronger than regular Indian lagers — around 6% alcohol.

Frequently Asked Questions

When is Oktoberfest 2026?

Oktoberfest 2026 runs from Saturday, 19 September to Sunday, 4 October 2026 in Munich. The festival always starts in mid-September and ends on the first Sunday of October. The opening keg-tapping happens at 12 noon on the first day.

Is Oktoberfest entry free?

Yes, entry to the Oktoberfest grounds and all beer tents is completely free. You pay only for food, drinks and fairground rides. A one-litre beer cost €14.50–15.80 (about ₹1,600–1,750) in 2025, and 2026 prices are expected to be slightly higher.

Do I need to book an Oktoberfest tent in advance?

No ticket is needed for tents, but reserved tables are booked out months ahead. Walk-in visitors can usually find seats on weekday mornings and afternoons. On weekends, arrive before 11 am or you may find tents closed due to overcrowding.

How much does an Oktoberfest trip from India cost?

A 5-day trip from Delhi or Mumbai costs roughly ₹1.2–1.3 lakh on a tight budget and around ₹2.2–2.3 lakh for a comfortable mid-range trip. Hotel prices in Munich double or triple during the festival, so booking early is the single biggest money-saver.

Is Oktoberfest good for vegetarians?

Better than most people expect. Käsespätzle (cheese noodles), giant pretzels, Obatzda cheese dip, potato salad, roasted almonds and vegetarian-friendly menus in major tents mean you will not go hungry. Many tents now mark vegetarian and vegan dishes clearly.

What visa do I need for Oktoberfest from India?

You need a short-stay Schengen visa from Germany, which also lets you visit 28 other European countries on the same trip. The all-in starting cost is about ₹11,900 including VFS charges. Apply 2–3 months before travel as September is peak season.

Can families and non-drinkers enjoy Oktoberfest?

Absolutely — Oktoberfest is a full fun-fair, not just a beer event. Tuesdays are official family days with discounted rides, and tents serve alcohol-free beer, lemonade and the cola-mix Spezi. Afternoons are relaxed and welcoming for all ages.

What should I wear to Oktoberfest?

Comfortable layers for 10–20°C weather, with a light jacket for evenings. Many visitors buy lederhosen (men) or a dirndl (women) locally from about €50–100, and joining in is genuinely encouraged. Sturdy shoes matter — you will walk and stand a lot.

How do I reach Oktoberfest from Munich Airport?

Take the S-Bahn (S1 or S8) from the airport to the city, about 40–45 minutes, then U-Bahn to Theresienwiese station which opens directly at the festival gates. A single airport-to-city ticket costs around €13–15. Taxis cost €70–90.

Which is better — Oktoberfest on a weekday or weekend?

Weekdays are calmer, cheaper to fly around and far easier for tent seating. Weekends bring the parades, the opening ceremony and maximum energy but also maximum crowds. First-timers from India often pick a weekday tent session plus one weekend visit for the atmosphere.
