The Elgin Fairlawn Kolkata

Visited their garden cafe, it was not on par with expectations.One would expect a very good service from a restaurant situated in a hotel like this, but to my dismay I've seen smaller caf??s and restaurants providing a much better service than this.Ambience was good and the Tai pan chicken was a 10/10. Pizza picante was good, not the best, so was the Penne Alfredo grilled chicken pasta, 7/10.Just a heads up, the restaurant charges 18% gst instead of the regular 5% since it's a part of a 4 star hotel.Overall verdict is okay-ish, mainly because of the unexpected poor service.

Fairlawn Hotel is not just a place to stay- it’s an experience that takes you back in time. The colonial-era architecture, vintage decor and peaceful ambience make it stand out from typical modern hotels. The location is excellent, especially for exploring central Kolkata and nearby attractions.The staff are extremely courteous and helpful, always ready to make your stay comfortable. The food is also quite good, with a decent variety for breakfast and meals. What I loved most is the calm, nostalgic vibe of the place. It feels like a quiet retreat amidst the busy city.That said, since it’s an old property, a few areas could use some renovation and modern upgrades. But honestly, that slightly "aged charm" is also part of its appeal.Overall, a wonderful stay for anyone who appreciates history, character, and warm hospitality. Would definitely love to visit again!

A wonderful stay as always at the Elgin Fairlawn! Beautifully renovated and wonderful sense of history’ but what really makes this place special is the staff, as well as the owners. Senior manager Abhirup Chatterjee deserves a special mention for his exceptional professional service and care with guests and the hotel- he is just lovely, and a true asset to the team. Owner Viraj and his wife care so much about making sure everyone is happy and well taken care of - they obviously care deeply both their guests and their staff. Beautiful to see. They’ve done a wonderful job restoring and caring for the hotel. We love all the staff- unfortunately too many to mention here by name. Thank you to everyone for a wonderful stay!

It is definitely one of those places where you enjoy spending time with friends and family.However, I would like to share one small observation regarding service culture. In cities that operate at truly global hospitality standards’like in Thailand, for example’people in customer-facing roles greet guests warmly and display a visible sense of hospitality and care. That culture makes a huge difference to the overall experience.Kolkata has incredible food, heritage, and character, but to truly match global standards, the hospitality culture needs to evolve. Customer-facing staff should ideally greet guests with warmth, attentiveness, and a welcoming attitude.Sometimes there is a certain classic Bengali snobbishness or indifference in service interactions, which can unintentionally take away from an otherwise excellent experience.That said, the place itself is fantastic and definitely worth visiting. With a slightly more polished hospitality approach, it could easily match the best dining experiences globally.
