Coronavirus in India: Railways takes major steps for the safety and hygiene of trains and stations

In the wake of a rising number of COVID-19 cases in India, the Indian Railways is taking various measures to maintain hygienic travel conditions for its passengers.

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal had tweeted that the Indian Railways network is taking necessary preventive measures in all its zones.

Some of the critical steps include: 

  • Trains and coaches are thoroughly sanitised and cleaned for the safety of rail passengers. 
  • Hand railings of the seats, food trays, curtains and other areas are undergoing rigorous sanitisation process. 
  • At the train stations, hand railings of the escalators are being cleaned regularly to prevent the spread of the virus infection. 
  • The steam cleaning method is in place to decontaminate the washrooms/toilets. 
  • The Indian Railways staff is using protective gear such as masks and gloves during the cleaning of trains and stations. 
  • Special dryers are in use to clean linens, towels and more.
