Rajkot International Airport, Hirasar

Rajkot International Airport, officially known as Hirasar Airport, is a greenfield facility located in the Rajkot district of Gujarat. Named after the village of Hirasar where it was constructed, the airport was inaugurated on July 27, 2023, and commenced commercial operations in September 2023. It serves as the primary replacement for the original Rajkot Airport, which could no longer expand to meet modern aviation requirements. As a recently opened facility, it is currently scaling its passenger numbers and is designed to accommodate over 2.8 million travelers annually, though it does not yet appear in the top tier of India's busiest airports by traffic volume. Key milestones include the terminal’s achievement of a GRIHA-4 star rating for sustainability and the development of a 3,040-meter runway that allows for the operation of larger narrow-body aircraft. Rajkot functions as a vital industrial hub for the Saurashtra region, specializing in automobile parts, jewelry, and textile manufacturing. The airport supports this role by providing the necessary logistics and connectivity for the city’s business district, while also acting as a strategic gateway for tourists visiting the heritage destinations and wildlife sanctuaries of western Gujarat.
