I should probably begin by saying that I am a very well-travelled and extremely choosy hotel guest. I know what I like, I notice the details, and I am certainly not inclined to declare somewhere wonderful simply because it has five stars and an impressive address.My six-night stay at the Taj Mahal Palace did not actually begin particularly well. I was unhappy with the first room allocated to me and made it quite clear that it was not a room in which I wanted to spend the next six nights.What happened next, however, probably says more about the Taj Mahal Palace than a flawless arrival ever could.The staff listened. There was no defensiveness and no attempt to persuade me that I should simply accept what I had been given. Instead, they went to considerable lengths to understand exactly what I wanted and to find me a room that I would genuinely be happy with for the duration of my stay. They succeeded — and the difference it made to my experience was enormous.It would be very easy at this point to write all the usual things about the Taj: the magnificent building, its history, the beautiful public rooms, excellent amenities and exceptional location overlooking the Gateway of India. All of that is true, but it has also been written a thousand times.For me, the real distinction is the people.There is an extraordinary standard of service here, but more importantly, there is a humanity to it. The staff don't simply perform the mechanics of five-star hospitality; they pay attention. They remember things. They notice what you need, often before you ask, and somehow manage to be attentive without becoming intrusive.And that, for a very choosy traveller, is what separates a genuinely great hotel from an expensive one.The Taj Mahal Palace isn't perfect — my first room proved that — but perfection is perhaps the wrong test. How a hotel responds when something isn't right tells you far more about it. On that measure, the Taj has been exceptional.I arrived prepared to be critical. I shall leave understanding why this hotel has the reputation it does.
