Elephanta Caves are approximately 9 km away from Gateway of India. You can opt for a boatride if you are looking for adventure. Once on Elephanta Island, you will have to walk across the caves, or else there is a mini-train which covers some distance.

Monkeys are quite a menace here. So, it is wise to keep a safe distance. Also don't carry eatables with you. Origins of the caves are displayed amazingly on pictorial displays in a museum located just on the site.
