Perched atop a lush, picturesque, green hill in the Coorg region, Madikeri offers a great retreat from the mundane city life. Home to river Kaveri and point of its ethereal origin, it presents a unique appeal to pious and religious travellers. A city with a royal legacy, the majestic waterfalls, unspoilt beauty of nature and vast plantations offer a surreal experience.
Sprawling tea and coffee plantations and graceful elephants welcome you to Madikeri, in the sublime Coorg region. Engage in the royal history of the city, which is named after its ruler, Mudduraja. Visit the Raja's Seat, where erstwhile rulers used to enjoy the sunset, for a regal view of the sunset and the valley below. Go to Thalakaveri, the sacred and reverred origin of Kaveri river for some breathtaking views. Madikeri, or Mercara, is the main town of Coorg. Its famous Madikeri Fort was originally a mud structure, which Tipu Sultan rebuilt with stone. Raja’s Seat, one kilometre from the bus station, was where the Kodagu kings would traditionally view sunrises and sunsets. The hill town has many attractions which are worth exploring.   Taste some mind-blowing meat dishes and cuisines and digest it all with a scenic trek to places in and aroung around this decadent town, which continues to retain its old world charm with busy bazaars and red roofed buildings. With streaming rivulets, lush green surroundings and a misty, fresh air, Madikeri is an excellent option for a leisured, relaxed getaway.
