about jayalakshmi vilas

Located inside the lush green landscaped of the University of Mysore in Manasagangothri, Jayalaxmi Vilas has been awarded the status of being a heritage building. Apart from the verdant surroundings, the palace also enjoys the views afforded by its picturesque setting, on a hillock set right next to the Kukkarahalli Lake. Today, the mansion houses a research centre and a Folklore museum, which contains rare and unique collection of items related to folklore, geology and archaeology from all over India. It was constructed by Sri Chamaraja Wodeyar for the royal comforts of his eldest daughter Jayalakshammanni in 1905. Formerly known as the ‘First Rajkumari Mansion', this palace has a 3-wing structure, elaborated with a sequence of Corinthian and ionic columns and royal pediments. The breathtaking interiors of the palace are done in an Indian style with beautiful carvings and mouldings in wood and masonry. The other highlights of the palace are the dancing hall (with a beautifully stained glass roof) and the Kalyana Mantapa (with an 8-petaled dome), apart from the handsomely decorated residential rooms.
