about gateway of the palace of yusuf adil shah

This gateway is the only remains of the magnificent royal residence constructed under the reign of Yusuf Adil Shah Khan, the sultan of Bijapur and the last of the Muslim rulers of Goa. The palace built by Adil Shah was quite exquisite, with an amalgamation of Hindu as well as Muslim architecture. It was one of the main attractions of Goa till it was demolished in 1820 and served as a residence of the Portuguese Governor until 1696.

Situated close to the Church of St. Cajetan in Old Goa, this striking three-metre-high Gateway has been built using basalt. Located close to the Mandovi waterfronts, this historic monument consists of a horizontal lintel resting on pillars decorated with moldings and these pillars have fragmentary perforated screens on the outer side.
