how to reach amarnath temple

The trek can be strated from Shrinagar or Pahalgam, the latter taking 5-6 days. A shorter route from Baltal is only 16 km long but quite challeging. There are regular buses plying from Shrinagar to pahalgam and Baltal. Th yatra is conducted by the Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB). These days helicopter services also operate if the weather permits.

about amarnath temple

Amarnath temple is a cave temple located in the Jammu and Kashmir. It is about 75 ft high and at least 80 ft deep, with its outer mouth measuring about 40 yards across. It remains under the snow throughout the year except during the summer months of June and July when the snow melts enough to make it accessible. This is the only time when devotees make the annual pilgrimage to Amarnath.

Legend says that this is the place where Lord Shiva explained the secret of life and eternity to his wife, Goddess Parvati. He chose this spot after making sure there were no living beings around. He created a fire that destroyed any and all living things within the temple. Except an egg was left unharmed. A pair of pigeons born out of this egg became immortal after listening to the secret. Even today, a pigeon pair is always seen roosting near the cave.
