Considered to be the Kashi of the South, Mahabaleshwar Temple is held in high reverence by devotees. The temple is said to be one of the seven sacred Muktikshetras in India and is visited by Hindus to perform the death rites for their departed ancestors and to take the blessings of Lord Shiva.

The ancient temple is constructed in Dravidian architectural style also features the sacred Shiva linga in the temple along with a 1500 year old Shiva idol. Situated 1 km away from the bus stand, the temple is abuzz with resonating hymns and prayers during the aarti in the evenings. The temple also holds a different aura during the celebration of Shivaratri in the month of February. The magnificent idol of Lord Shiva is mounted on a temple chariot and is driven to the temple from the main bazaar. Bustling with immense activity, the temple sees a number of devotees all through the year.
