The largest city of Assam, Guwahati (gauhati) was earlier known as Pragjyotishpura meaning 'the light of the east'. It is an enchanting city with diverse ethnicity and cultures. The mighty River Brahmaputra flows right in between the city delicately splitting it into two halves. Situated at the foothills of the Shillong Plateau and fed by the Brahmaputra, the city is home to a variety of flora and fauna. It is a splendorous terrain complimented by green hills, beautiful wet lands and plush flora and fauna.
Once the historic capital of undivided Assam, Guwahati (gauhati) is now a cosmopolitan city and the commercial hub of Northeast. Guwahati (gauhati) is known as the Gateway to the East and is the first stop for most north-east itineraries for travellers. This alluring city on the banks of the River Brahmaputra features a deluge of ethnicity and cultures from all across the state and the neighboring places. The city is encompassed by lush greenery and it is the home to numerous age old temples that attracts both pilgrims and nature lovers to the place. There are many famous and ancient temples in the city, making it popular with pilgrims. Peacock Island, that is believed to be the smallest river island in the world, sheltering the splendid Umananda Temple is just another pride of the city. The sacred Kamakhya Devi Temple is also located in Guwahati and is thronged by millions of devotees and visitors. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati is one of the most beautiful campus in India, with the Brahmaputra flowing right through it.

The real Guwahati resided in the city's back alleys and old quarters which offer a glimpse into the local life. Soak up the true flavours of the city as you walk the winding roads. Single storey houses mingle with colonial era structures and leave you impressed with the stark contrast. The city has been plundered many times, by Mughals, by the Burmese army and the British -- and has always bounced back, retaining its soul. This is where the British fell in love with the tea and today, Assam Tea is the most sought after in the world. Guwahati (gauhati) is known for its rich cultural heritage, always contributing to arts, dance and music.
