As the legends goes, the place Shillong or The scotland of the East was named after a beautiful youth named Shyllong born to a virgin mother in a village near Bisi. This boy Shyllong later came to be regarded as the local deity after whom the place was named as Shillong.
Shillong has had a very modest history and it was considered just a small village. It was only after 1864 that Shillong was given the status of new civil station of Khasi and Jaintia hills. During the rule of the Britishers, Shillong was considered as the erstwhile provincial state of Assam and served as the capital even after the Independence. They were so taken by the beauty of the Shillong that they referred to it as the Scotland of the East. This beautiful place can approached from Assam via a Guwahati to Shillong taxi which takes about only 1 hour to reach.
Shillong also served as the summer capital of Eastern Bengal for several years. However, things took a nasty turn, when the whole of Shillong was destroyed in a major earthquake in 1897. But the place rose from the ashes like a Phoenix to attain its full glory and after Meghalaya attained statehood on January 21, 1972, Shillong was declared its capital.

Shillong has a blend of many indigenous cultures. The Major tribe that constitutes Shillong is Khasi tribe. This is a culturally rich tribe with its own rich customs, costumes and cuisines. Khasi people are very friendly and whenever they meet, they offer each other Kwai or betel nut. This is eaten by people of all age, class and sex. This breaks down the differences and creates a bond of brotherhood among the tribe.

Since Shillong has predominantly Khasi tribe, they follow the tradition of matriarchal society. Children take the family name of the mother and the property is inherited by the youngest daughter and basically women are the head of the family. You will find women handling almost all jobs, be it shops in market, petrol pumps, vegetable or fish vendors. In Shillong women power rules.

Shillong tourism offers you a chance to witness dreamy landscapes, enchanting waterfalls, mesmerizing forests and ancient hills. This place draws people from all over the world. Come experience the bliss and solitude of the mountains and return all refreshed and rejuvenated.
