With breathtaking beauty and a dewey, refreshing air enveloping you in Shillong, you really don't want to spend your holiday in a non-personal hotel room. If you're a traveler who wants to stay in touch with a little bit of history and a little bit of nature, and yet never compromise on comforts, resorts are an ideal accommodation category for you. Stay in picture-perfect cottages and lodges and settle into the laid-back lifestyle of Meghalaya. Some of the popular resorts in Shillong are:

  • Orchid Lake Resort

Overlooking the Umiam Lake, this beautiful property is the perfect blend of pristine nature and modern comforts. Make sure you carry your favourite books and music, for the garden outside makes a perfect backdrop for a laidback holiday. The large glass-windows in the Dining Hall offers a surreal view of the lake, while you sit inside surrounded by warm interiors and lovely wooden floors. Or better still, take your bed-tea to the in-room balcony and let the view make you sigh. This resort is situated 17 kms away from the bustling centre of the city and promises to be a perfect retreat. This beautiful property is recognised and run by the Meghalaya Tourism Department.

Tariffs here typically range between INR 1100 to INR 2500.

  • Ri Kynjai

In Khasi, the name of the resort literally translates as the "land of serene environs", which is apt for its surroundings and the views that it offers. The architecture of the cottages here is also inspired by the Khasi eco-centric style of thatched roofs, all of which face east towards the UmiamLake and the rising sun. With ambient lighting and wooden floors, this little piece of heaven is an ideal option for all kinds of travellers, especially those looking for some peace and quiet. It would be important to note that this resort if 22k kms away from the city centre of Shillong.

  • Aerodene Resort

Smack in the middle of the buzzing town of Shillong where you would least expect it, this little resort blends in modernity with a traditional North Eastern lifestyle. Constructed with bamboo (ikkra) and sand and lime (surkki), it ensures that no water seeps in, using natural methods. The wood borders of doors and windows are left unfinished and unpainted, also inspired by the Meghalayan style of architecture, which help maintain its decadent charm. The resort is a 60 year old building along the Umshyrpi river, which has been refurbished to serve guests and overlooks a lush, green garden with blossoming flowers. The rooms are designed to make you feel right at home, with a warm personal touch visible in its interiors. They also have a wellness and yoga centre, which only enhance the overall peace you would experience here.

The furniture, dishes, paintings, photographs, everything will remind you of an era gone by, preserved in this quaint bungalow-turned resort. Sip your favourite cuppa tea or coffee or just stroll around in the beautifully manicured garden, with blooming and colorful flowers and chirping birds to give you company. The bungalow now is divided into 1 suite, 4 Deluxe and 2 Standard rooms, each with its own personal character. They also have an in-house chef, who can cook meals for you if you feel too lazy to travel to the main city, which is about 20 minutes away on foot.

One of the earliest and best cottages to stay come right at the heart of town. Its at the historic Shillong Club (Residential Quarters). Managed by a private company, the Residential Quarters of the Shillong Club is your best bet while staying in Shillong due to its convenient location, parking and sumptuous food. They have 4 cottages which date back to the British era and have thankfully maintained most of the structure. Even with a few refurbishments, the cottages give you the old colonial feel of what was the British's summer capital and privacy right at the heart of the city. Tarrifs range between 3,500-4200 nett and sure are worth the bucks. Apart from the cottages, they have about 16 rooms ranging between ₹1920-₹3000 nett which are also value for money bets due to the location and service as hotels in Shillong are generally a tab on the higher side and cheaper ones usually arnt convenient to reach/move about.
