Which are the popular religious sites in Gulmarg?

0 people found this answer useful Useful ?Yes

Religious sites of Gulmarg provide a glimpse into the different eras and times the town has undergone. Some of the famous ones are:

  • Maharani/Rani Temple

You can probably see it from your hotel or as you enter Gulmarg. Built on top of a small hillock in the middle of Gulmarg, it is visible from almost every corner of this town. The temple is one of the last few remnants of the Dogra kingdom. When you visit the temple, the humble and kindly priest performing the aarti and distributing prasad among devotees is Ghulam Mohammad Shiekh, who has been performing the priestly duties for the past 22 years. He is a living testament to how unnatural the divide between Muslims and Hindus in the Kashmir valley is. During militancy, when the natives of the town fled, Sheikh took it upon himself to shoulder the duties of a pujari. His day begins and ends with uttering verses from the Quran and shlokas from the Gita with the same fluency and devotion everyday.

Built in 1480, it is a highly revered religious site. Dedicated to Baba Reshi, a Muslim scholar and Saint, during the period of King of Kashmir Zain-ul-Abidin, here you will get a glimpse into the Persian and Mughal architecturalstyle of the 15th century. You can see its tall spires from a distance and access it by means of sledges and field chutes.

Surrounded by alpine trees and old fashioned huts, a visit to this church is sure to transport you 150 years back to the time it was built by the British rulers. It is a beautiful exemplar of the Victorian architecture and seems more of a small-countryside chapel.

These religious sites are sacred not only for religious reasons but also because of what they represent and stand for; a monument to the varied cultural heritage of not just this town, but also the state at large.
