If you thought air travel was a cakewalk, try landing at these 10 unique airports in the world. Yes, it could be quite an experience.

Juancho E. Yrausquin, Saba

This airport in the Caribbean island of Saba has the shortest commercial runway of 396 m. Though it looks incredible from atop, we are sure you will give a sigh of relief once you land safely. However, the beautiful areas around the airport are worth a visit. This is considered to be one of the most dangerous airports for landing.

Ice Runway, Antarctica

The thought of landing in the
ice land of Antarctica might sound really exciting! But hold your breath, the Ice Runway is considered to be one of the most dangerous runway to land. The real challenge is making sure that the weight of the aircraft doesn’t bust the ice or get the plane stuck in the soft snow. To get that balance right is the deal.

Barra International Airport, Scotland

This airport also serves as a beach--yes you heard that right! The takeoffs and landings at Barra Airport are on the same sand that people take a stroll on during the airport’s off-hours. But don’t worry, there are warning signs when flights are expected to arrive. Catching a glimpse of beach landings can give that extra zing to your holiday!

Gibraltar Airport, Gibraltar

What makes it to the list of 10 unique airports in the world is the fact that the airport corridor in the city of Gibraltar actually passes through the main street of the city. So, every time a plane lands or is ready for take off, the vehicles are stopped. Amazing, isn't it?

Toncontin International Airport, Honduras

Toncontin runway is considered as one of the most dangerous in the world because of its position and inclement weather. Surrounded by mountains, there’s only one way for the planes to come and go, which increases the risk and the charm dramatically.

Princess Juliana International Airport, Sint Maarten

We shouldn't say much about this airport in the Netherlands, the picture says it all that! Landing here is exciting as well as adventurous because one end of the runway is very close to the popular and always crowded Maho Beach. Not to mention, the view from above is breathtaking.

Lukla Airport, Nepal

Located in eastern Nepal, Lukla Airport topped the list of the most dangerous airports in a recent survey by the History Channel. It serves as a base for trekkers to the Himalayas. The airport has a very short runway of 527 m only, and has a mountain at one end and a cliff at the other.

Paro Airport, Bhutan

Bhutan's only international airport, what makes Paro Airport dangerous is the magnificent Himalayan Range surrounding it —some of them over 18000 ft high which makes landing at the airport very risky. Only selected pilots are licensed to fly into the airport.

LaGuardia Airport, New York City

Stunning city views, right? But pilots have to avoid interfering with flights from two other extremely busy airports nearby--JFK and Newark. And moreover, the airport’s location shows that it is located just 15.29 kms from the city of Manhattan,
New York. Now that is pretty close!

Courchevel Altiport, France

What makes us include Courchevel Altiport in the list is its runway-- that is just 537 m, and no lighting aids to guide pilots in foggy or stormy weather. And that is not all, one has to watch out for skiers because the airport sits next to an active ski run. But once landed safely, the airport offers beautiful views of the Alps and the slopes.
