about assam state museum

Assam State Museum is located near the Dighalipukhuri water tank in Guwahati. This gorgeous museum dedicated to the culture and heritage of Assam offers a vivid and astonishing display of the centuries old traditions of the state. The anthology of antiques displayed in the museum dates back to the pre-historic era. The collection boasts of some of the most authentic prehistoric ivory paintings, sculptures, metal, woodwork and costumes etc.

Constructed in 1940, the Assam State Museum has ever since made a constant effort to incorporate the ever changing culture and lifestyle of the Assamese community. Starting from the local musical instruments used by the tribes to the apparels of the people are exhibited gorgeously in here. There are also replicas of the tribal huts where you can walk in and examine the tit bits of the place.

There is also a Library in the Assam State Museum that stocks books, journals and periodicals on art, culture, mythology, biography, encyclopedic works and even the Asiatic Society (Kolkata based) journals of India.

Some good collections including numismatics and artifacts. Needs to be better documented and maintained.
