about brahmagiri wildlife sanctuary

Though the area around the Brahmagiri Peak was only recently identified as one of the biodiversity hotspots in the Western Ghats, it has been recognised for long as a place with an unusual geography, harbouring a great variety of life. It was legally notified as a sanctuary in 1974. The Brahmagiri Wildlife Sanctuary covers an area of over 180 sq km, and is close to the better known Nagarhole National Park (separated only by coffee plantations).

There are human settlements around the sanctuary — apart from coffee plantations and paddy fields — and therefore, man-elephant conflict is not uncommon. The sanctuary is an important elephant corridor as well, as it’s connected to both Nagarhole and Wayanad sanctuaries — if one discounts the coffee plantations in between, that is.
