about dindigul fort

Located around 400 km from Chennai, Dindigul Fort is believed to be the first fortification on the rock built by the Nayakas of Madurai to defend their country from the Mysore army. In 1790, the British invaded the fort and barricaded it till 1860. Later, in 1970, Haider Ali reworked on the fort and used it as a launching pad to attack the British during the Carnatic wars.

Once here, you’ll observe an irregular wall built with finely jointed stone blocks and brick crenulations. Also, there are a number of other structures built on the top. One interesting thing to look for would be the canon of English origin, which has been now preserved over the bastion. The central shrine here is delicately carved and recalls the artistic traditions on soapstone in Karnataka. The inscriptions on the shrine talk about the donation give by the Vijayanagara king Krishnadevaraya to the Tambiranar (the presiding deity) of Dindigul.
