about guruvayur temple

Guruvayur Temple, located in the temple town of Guruvayur, is dedicated to Lord Krishna (an incarnation of Vishnu) . It is one of the most sacred places for Vaishnavites, even though it is not included in the 108 Divya Desams (holy places dedicated to Lord Vishnu). The temple is commonly known as Bhuloka Vaikuntham (home of Lord Vishnu on Earth). Guruvayur Temple is an important Krishna temple in Kerala. The idol of Lord Vishnu here is made of the sacred Patalanjana stone. The idol here shows Lord Vishnu as four-armed, carrying the Sudarshan Chakra, a lotus, a conch and a mace in each of his hands. Though the main idol worshipped here is Lord Vishnu, the temple is called Shri Krishna Temple because it is believed that Lord Krishna in his boyhood would be seen frequently around the temple premises. Legends state that the deity worshipped here is more than 5000 years old.

The rituals of the temple, laid down by Adi Shankaracharya, are very strictly followed here under the supervision of the head priest. The temple forms the lifeline of the town. There is a strict dress code. Men are expected to wear the traditional mundus without covering their chest. Women are expected to wear saris and girls are expected to wear wear skirts that fully cover their legs.
