The North East in India was often seen as being off-limits and a difficult destination for travellers. But thanks to government efforts and the booming tourism industry, this region is becoming quite easy to access and enjoy. Kick back and forget about all travel planning worries, for there are more ways than one to reach Shillong. Here's a peek into how you can reach this beautiful town:

  • By Air
If budgeting is not your primary concern, shell out some cash and reach Shillong before you know it. The nearest airport to Shillong is the Umroi Airport, just 35 km from the city centre. This airport is small, and currently only runs Air India flights from Kolkata and back. If you're taking the flight to Umroi, there are plenty of Meghalaya Tourism buses (MTDC) that ferry travellers between Police Bazaar and the airport. These buses only run on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 11am from Shillong and coordinated with flight arrivals from Umroi Airport. Typically, a bus journey from Umroi takes close to an hour and charges INR 100 per passenger.

For more flight connections to the rest of India, you could also try booking a flight till the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport at Guwahati, which is only 128 km away from Shillong. There are several shared cabs and taxis available from the airport for this 3 hour long journey and costs around INR 300 per person. MTDC also runs buses between Shillong (Police Bazaar) and the Guwahati airport at fixed intervals during the day and charges INR 250 per person. They operate at 2 and 4 pm from Guwahati airport (for Shillong) and at 6.30 and 9.30 am from Shillong (for Guwahati).

  • By Rail
The interesting trivia about Meghalaya revolves around how there are no railway tracks in the entire state. The nearest railway station to Shillong is thus at Guwahati, 104 km away from the city centre at Shillong. Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) has several buses that operate between 6am and 5pm, coordinated with train arrival and departure timings. A bus journey from the Guwahati station takes close to 3 and a half hours.

With all these details figured out, you can safely start packing and weaving dreams of a perfect Shillong vacation. Happy holidays!

There is only 1 way to reach Shillong. It's by road from Guwahati.
You can reach Guwahati by either road, rail or air.

Don't try flight to Shillong as it's not a regular service. Chances are there that you will be stranded at Kolkata airport.
It's always better to fly to Guwahati and then take a taxi or bus.

excellent info
But i cannot find flight information from kolkata to umroi... most people are ignorant.. AIR INDIA is not supportive either... please provide details about KOLKATA-UMROI flight
1) schedule
2) tentative fare per adult
3) no. of days operative per week

thank you for providing the above info... please reply.

Don't try CCU-SHL route. Flights are erratic and might be cancelled at the last moment. Flying to Guwahati is a much better option as Guwahati is well connected to the rest of the county.
