Even if you have planned to spend your vacation lying about and soaking up the sun, eventually you might feel the need to give your muscles some workout and check out some nearby places. There are various ways to explore Kovalam. Here’s how you can get around the city.

  • Taxi

The best option if you are travelling in groups. Usually the drivers are friendly enough to suggest certain places worth visiting. Please confirm the rates with the hotel or any other trustworthy source, before deciding on a deal. Some hotels also provide sightseeing packages, which might be more economical.

  • Auto Rickshaws

The usual rate is INR 15 for every kilometre, but sometimes they can charge you up to INR 100 for a kilometre, especially if you are a foreigner. Before venturing out anywhere ask the usual rates from the hotel staff. That will give you a good edge when you negotiate the price with the drivers. The meters usually don’t work, so if you feel the driver is trying to rip you off, find another one.

  • Cycle Rickshaws

This is a convenient mode of transportation for travelling short distances. The fares can be slightly steeper than any other tourist destination in India. For a short distance of 1 kilometre, don’t pay more than INR 20. If you stay near the beach, the shops and restaurants are usually within walking distance.

  • Bikes

Bikes are available on rent here. Driving on roads lined by coconut trees and lush greenery is an amazing experience. We recommend you try the Enfield 350 CC bike for a complete vintage experience. The city roads of Trivandrum is quite congested and not fit for drivers who are not used to such roads and traffic.

Remember, the drivers of taxis or rickshaws can usually spot a tourist easily and try to rip them off. Your best bet is to have a fair idea of the rates beforehand before you start haggling. And haggle you must. It is expected in India.
