Known as “Somnath of the East”, this beautiful temple has an intriguing past which you will love to take a look at. So, we bring to you some interesting facts about Bhojpur Temple, which is very popular among locals.

1. This quaint Bhojpur Temple is an incomplete structure and you can still trace the earthen ramp which was used to build the temple. An existing mud ramp at the rear of the temple indicates the method used in carrying the stone slabs to construct the dome.

2. Legend has it that Mahmud Ghaznavi undertook its construction after the invasion of the original Somnath Temple. It is said that Bhojpur Temple was created only in a single day, and taking one look at its structure will leave you awestruck for sure.

3. Even with its incomplete structure, this temple is one of the finest examples of architecture of the 11 CE.An hour’s drive from the city of Bhopal, this sleepy town of Bhojpur has few other attractions.

4. Within the sanctum and atop a massive platform of three limestone blocks stands the lingam–a fabulous synthesis of solidity and lightness. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is visible even from a distance as it is located on a hilltop.

5. With its enormous circumference of over 17 ft and a commendable height of 7.8 ft, the Lingam is reputed to be the tallest such structure in India.

6. The Cyclopean Dam near the temple was a marvel during olden times; the great dam now lies in ruins on the western side of Bhojpur. The dam was built on a vast lake which is nowhere to be seen today.
