about kalikambal temple

Dedicated to Goddess Kalikambal, a form of Goddess Parvati, and  Sri Shiva as Lord Kamateswarar, Kalikambal Temple is yet another living memoir of the city's ancient history. While its origin and history are a matter of speculation, it is popularly believed that initially a fiercer form of Goddess Kamakshi was worshiped at the temple. Later, it was replaced with a calmer form, Shanta Swaroopa. Built in 1678, Kalikambal temple is a historic temple that has been ornately carved.

While the temple is thronged by a large number of devotees on any given day, it vibrates with an entirely different level of devotional energy during the 11th day Brahmotsavam festival which is much larger in scale. On the ninth day of the festival, an image of Sri Chakra Vimaanam as well as of Goddess Kamakshi, decorated ornately and elaborately, is taken out in a procession on beautiful chariot lined with metal cymbals, called Kinnitter.

Considered the guardian angel of the city, Kalikambal temple is also where the great warrior Shivaji paid his reverence in 1677, an incident commemorated with a plaque and picture of Emperor Shivaji in the temple.
