about lodi garden

A landmark that is a confluence of the essence and energy of old world Delhi and urban Delhi, Lodi Garden encapsulates an entire era of the Pashtun dynasty that ruled over most of Northern India during 16 CE. Studded with domes of the tombs of rulers from the Sayyid and Lodi dynasties, Lodi Garden  is one of the few landmarks in Delhi that has been assimilated in the daily lives of every successive generations over the years. From afar you can spot the tomb of Mohammed Shah, the earliest of the tombs built at the gardens in 1444, identifiable by its overhanging stone eaves, octagonal structure with a central chamber. Sikander Lodi's tomb is the double domed, smaller structure in the north-west corner of the garden.

Landscaped in 1968 by Joseph Allen Stein, they are today a jogger’s delight and picnicker’s haven. A favourite haunt of Delhiites, today Lodi Garden has become a delightful city park. Early morning and late evening, you will be winding your way through lawns and paths filled with joggers, yoga practitioners, kids playing cricket, politicians on their power walks and couples relaxing. There are over a hundred different species of trees out here. Right in the middle of the garden is the Bada Gumbad (dome), a gateway to the mosque it leads to ,and right next to the mid-15th century Bada Gumbad is the Sheesh Gumbad (glass dome), all built during the reign of Sikander Lodi. A site protected by the Archaeological Survey of India, the Lodi Gardens is a site of immense cultural heritage of Delhi.
