about mahanavami dibba

A beautiful, grand stone platform, Mahanavmi Dibba once the site of royal celebrations and events, today it is the perfect place to get a sweeping view of the ancient land of Hampi and see the sun set as it once did on the once-glorious Jijaynagara empire. Built by King Krishnadevaraya after his conquest over the kingdom of Udaygiri, present day Orissa, Mahanavami Dibba is the highest establishment in Hampi and possibly used by the kings to watch baronial processions of the army and enjoy celebrations, particularly Navratri, the night day of which it is named after.

It is speculated that it was a throne room or audience hall of some kind used for royal ceremonies.

Chiseled with images of elephants, horses and the stately processions that marked the paths of Hampi, there are two sets of staircases that lead to the top of the platform, one at the back and one on its front. On the platform's surface you can spot remnants of wooden pavillions while on all its 3 tiers you can spot the engravings, typical of Vijayanagra architecture. It's the carvings and mouldings on the lower most tier that are particularly fascinating.

Narrating the life and times during the Vijanagara empire, there are carvings of merchants, possibly Portuguese, as well as of various European visitors, captured strikingly in their dressing style and appearance including the upward turn of their moustaches.
