about mysore zoo

Established in the year 1892 under royal patronage, Mysore Zoo is one of the oldest zoos in the world. Also known as Shri Chamarajendra Zoological Garden, this zoo was set up out of a portion of the king’s (Maharaja Chamaraja Wodeyar) summer palace.

The zoo houses a variety of rare and exotic wildlife, including green anacondas, elephants, lions, tigers, giraffes among others. This is the only zoo in India to have gorillas. People keen on birdwatching need to reach early as the aviary section closes by 5 PM. The zoo also runs an "animal adoption programme", wherein the general public is encouraged to adopt animals for a given time period. Another feather in the hat for this zoo is that it is a "No Plastic Zone", and even if you are carrying plastic bags, they will give you paper bags to keep your stuff.

The best time to visit Mysore Zoo is during the summer holidays. You can also plan a trip around the Dussehra festival or enjoy the spectacle of New Year celebrations! The zoo is conveniently located in the eastern part of the city, at a distance of about 3 kms from the City Bus Stand and 2 kms from the Mysore Palace.
