about nandi hills

Shrouded in fables about the origins of its name, Nandi Hills are a bunch of small hillocks 65 kms east of Bangalore. Thronged by tourists all year long for its pleasurable climes, it also has the famous Nandi Temple, built over years in the rule of Nandi Hills' historic emperors from Banas Dynasty to the Kings of Vijayanagar. The temple depicts fantastic craft in stone sculpture and iron moulding, and the residing deities are Bhoganandiswara and Yoganandiswara. Another tourist attraction is the point is Tipu's Drop, which was the place where criminals were pushed off the hill as punishment. This point provides a panoramic view of the mist cloaked mountains and is a favoured site for enjoying breath taking views of sunrise. In recent times, paragliding has been offered here, a great kick for the adventure enthusiast. The hills get their name from the beautiful statue of Nandi standing guard outside the Yoganandeeshwara Temple atop the hills. Elsewhere, the peaks give birth to the rivers Arakavati, Pennar and Palar. Nandi Hills have for long attracted a loyal following among royalty and commoners alike. Tipu Sultan, who ruled Mysore in the late 18th century, came here to recover from the din of battle. He fortified Nandi Hills and made it his summer haven. The Brits took over Nandi Hills, in looking for the salubrious climate of their homeland. Sir Mark Cubbon former Commissioner of Bengaluru, made it his official summer residence. Many bungalows the Brits built still pepper the hills. Dignitaries, including Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Queen Elizabeth have visited. The point of all this name-dropping is that, with cobbled paths leading up to hills full of birdsong, Nandi Hills is a good getaway for you and your family too.
