ABOUT Pangong Tso
All those picture postcards you have sighed over, wishing yourself into the picture of majestic mountains with a sparkling lake flowing by that words do no justice to, your wish will finally come true at Pangong Tso or Pangong lake. Described fittingly by its Tibetan name, Bangong Co that translates to narrow, long, enchanted lake, Pangong Lake extends from India to Tibet, with its eastern end lying in Tibet. Sparkling in every possible shade of blue, Pangong Tso will hold you spell bound for hours on end with its utter, unimaginable beauty, the kind only nature can create. Unfortunately, the lake falls in disputed property with the line of control, controlled by China, passing through it. Currently, the lake is under the process of being identified as a wetland of immense significance, as it is visited by a number of migratory birds and is a breeding ground for a number of birds. Kiangs (wild asses) and Marmots (ground squirrels) depend on the lake for their water needs and during summers bar headed goose and brahmini ducks can be spotted in the lake. Once a freshwater lake, the lake has turned salty, but still manages to freeze during winters. Due to its brackish nature, the lake supports very little micro-vegetation and some small crustaceans. Hindi movie buffs might recognize the lake from Dil Se, Jab Tak hai jaan and 3 Idiots.
