about petra

Petra is considered the most famous and gorgeous site in Jordan.  It is the legacy of the Nabataeans, an industrious Arab people who settled in southern Jordan more than 2000 years ago. Admired then for its refined culture, massive architecture and ingenious complex of dams and water channels, Petra is now a UNESCO world heritage site that enchants visitors from all corners of the globe.

Located in the governorate of Ma’an, in southern Petra, this city was carved out of natural rock and stone which was red in colour. The lights that fall on the surfaces of various rock faces, illuminate and reflect a parade of shades of red, the vision of which is a heightened experience especially during the hour of sunset, when one can soak themselves in array of reds and other flaming hues.Literally carved directly into vibrant red, white, pink, and sandstone cliff faces, the prehistoric Jordanian city of Petra was "lost" to the Western world for hundreds of years.

Located amid rugged desert canyons and mountains in what is now the southwestern corner of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, Petra was once a thriving trading center and the capital of the Nabataean empire between 400 B.C. and A.D. 106.The city sat empty and in near ruin for centuries. Only in the early 1800s did a European traveler disguise himself in Bedouin costume and infiltrate the mysterious locale. In 1985, the Petra Archaeological Park was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and in 2007 it was named one of the new seven wonders of the world.

Built on by industrious Arabs, about 2000 years ago, who were roaming in caravans and incidentally found this spot as a convenient junction to procure spices from India and silk from China, it was further worked upon to serve as an important trade route linking Arabia to Syria, Greece, Egypt and Rome. While here, being enraptured by the sheer magnificence of the rock cut architecture, is but just the mere sight of a rock face away.

The whole area is a marvel. I think more restrictions need to be put in place as the area has the potential to be ruined with tourists and locals not adhering to main paths. Dress code needs to be implemented. Two things that were annoying was the am ...... read more
