While you are planning your vacation to this beautiful historical village in Andhra Pradesh, there is a list of places to see around Lepakshi.

Nandi Hills (93 km)

On the way back to Bengaluru, head for NH7, in the opposite direction from Hindupur. When you hit the highway, turn right towards Bengaluru and around the halfway point, just after Chikballapur, turn right again. This is the road to the hill station and health resort, Nandi Hills (14 km from here). With 48 hairpin bends, the road offers spectacular views.

Tipu’s Drop, a near 2,000-foothigh sheer cliff has a gory past. It’s from where convicted prisoners would be hurled to their death by Tipu Sultan’s decree.

If you want to get the best out of Tipu’s Drop, wait until the last tour bus departs with its cargo of noisy daytrippers. Then watch the dusk paint the horizon in vibrant colours. As the dusk melts, Bengaluru’s lights become visible in the distance, looking like a giant rangoli decorated with diyas.

Amrit Sarovar is a large tank fed by perennial springs, and is called the lake of ambrosia! Visit it at night, when it shimmers in the moonlight. Nearby lies the chabootara or platform where Tipu Sultan used to pray.

In the foothills is a jewel of a temple, the Bhoganandeeshwara Temple. This temple dates back to the Bana Dynasty in the 13th century, but was rebuilt over the centuries by Chola, Hoysala and Vijayanagara kings. The Nandi here is massive. Locals refer to Bhoganandeeshwara as doddu (big) Nandi and Yoganandeeshwara as chikka (small) Nandi.

The temple is linked to the history of the hills and its people. The most eye-catching structure of the temple is the Kalyana Mandapa, which stands on a high plinth with four elaborately carved pillars.

On the top is the 9th-century CE Yoganandeeshwara Temple. Interestingly, two forms of Lord Shiva are worshipped in the Nandi Hills: the Bhoganandeeshwara and the Yoganandeeshwara, representing two apposite manifestations of the lord, one as the sensuous (Bhoga) and the other as the ascetic (Yoga).

Past the fortification walls, strengthened by Haider Ali and Tipu Sultan, stands the summer residence of Sir Mark Cubbon, the British Commissioner of Mysore (1834-61). The handsome colonial structure of Nehru Nilaya, now called Nehru Nilaya guest house, is considered the best of among the other stay options and cheap hotels around Nandi hills. It can be booked at the Horticultural Department (Tel: 080- 26579231, after 10.30 am, at Lalbagh in Bengaluru. Its VIP suites consist of spacious rooms with high ceilings. It’s a pretty place with bordered walkways, rare trees and sit-outs with hill views. Meals are cooked in the canteen.

The other option is KSTDC’s Hotel Mayura PineTop with a bar and restaurant.
