about sancoale

Lying slightly west of San Antonio islet is the town of Sancoale, a small hamlet known mainly for the ruins of Our Lady of Health church. Arriving in 1560, the Jesuit missionaries came by the way of Sancoale, deciding to settle there. By way of commemorating their occupation they established the Nossa Senhora de Saude, Our Lady of Health, a magnificent church. Unfortunately, in 1834 a fire destroyed most of the church building, that took 6 years to complete.

Today only a part of the church's façade stands, declared a National Monument by the Archaeological Survey of India. Really a fragment of the original building, it is incredibly beautiful and gives a glimpse of how magnificent the church must have been. Ornamented with decorative panels and plaster work found usually in early Goan church architecture, the façade gives way to the newly built Our Lady of Health church, a more modest structure than the original.
