about shamiana

The Taj Mahal Palace's Shamiana has a pride of place in the history of Indian coffee shops as the first-ever 24-hour one. In its first avatar, it was large, buzzing and accessible. All that changed a few years ago when they re-did the decor; the ceiling now billows with beige sheers and gold-and-rust satin drapery (the intimidating fine-dining decor deters crowds from coming). As the book goes to press, I pop in for a meal and enjoy the unusual Laksa Pulao enlivened with Galangal Candlenut Lemon Grass. It's Chef Pradipto Das' Keema Pao which comes out tops. Grilled Fish, Asparagus Capuccino Soup and Masala Omlettte Sandwich are the hot sellers here. As is the Smoked Red Pepper Soup. Sandwiches to dosas and pizzas with pastas (including risotti like Risotto Pomodoro) here. Crisp dosas (especially the Rava Masala Dosa in all its large and crispy glory) are crowd favourites. Chicken and Vegetarian Biryani enjoy repeat orders. New sweet endings\: Chocolate 'n' Marshmallow Pizza and Cardammon Brulee. Don't miss the lavish, multi-cuisine spread if you're here at lunch (Rs.2,900). Special Saturday and Sunday Bubbly Buffets here take centre stage (Rs.2,600+ without and Rs.3,300/Rs.3,500+ with Champagne). I love the singing duo Reena and Linsey who enliven the restaurant over Saturday and Sunday lunch.rnP.S. Even though they keep saying they will be changing the intimidating fine-dining decor, they still haven't done so.

I have been visiting this place since time immemorial. Have been there for breakfast, lunch, dinner, evening snack and midnight bites. The staff will never disappoint you. The menu might seem a little dated at times but we just go there anyway. Thei ...... read more

The only credit of Shamiana is that it is open for 24 hours a day, so you can land up here anytime. The food here varies from dosa to pasta to sandwich to few other things. I prefer Dosa over anything else not only it is one of my favorite dish but a ...... read more
