about shaniwar wada palace

Peshwa Baji Rao I commissioned the  Shaniwar Wada Palace in 1729, and some of his larger-than-life character is reflected in the scale of the conception of this monument, which is in contrast to the austerity of town planning under the Peshwas. It was a sprawling palace with fountains and tanks, courtyards and fruit trees, offices and audience halls, and a substantial portion in which people used to reside. It is surrounded by five gates - Dilli Darwaza, Mastani Darwaja, Khidki Darwaja, Ganesh Darwaja and Jambhul Darwaja or Narayan Darwaja. The 18th century monument still looks majestic with its impressive doorways, plinths and huge walls.

Make sure you don’t miss the scintillating light & sound show which is held here every evening. The show is conducted in English and Marathi at specified times throughout the day. You will also love the interesting lotus-shaped fountain which is a real visual treat and is a great example of the exquisite craftsmanship of those times.
