about shankar temple

Housing a self-appearing or "swayambhoo" Mahalinga of Lord Shiva, Shankar temple is a prominent one for Hindus. It is also called Trigunatmaka, which signifies the trio of Brahma, Vishnu and Mahesha, who are embodied in the Mahalinga and are the temple's presiding deities.

The Mahalinga here is in the shape of a Rudraksha, unique and highly revered, even over the 12 Jyotirlingas in India. The top portion of the linga shows carvings of the five rivers of Panchganga too. A beautiful and magnificent temple complex, it is also said to have links with Shivaji and his mother Jeejabai.
