about sinhagad fort

If you are a history buff, then Sinhagad Fort in Pune should be at the top of your list. Come here to marvel at the simplicity of the tomb of Tanaji, Shivaji’s favourite general. He died at this place in the year 1670 after a successful bid to capture the fort. Legend has it that Tanaji and his men climbed the unprotected near-perpendicular face of the hill. He is said to have hurled a ghorpad, a local lizard species, tied to a stout, long rope. The ghorpad, called Yashwanti, anchored herself to a crevice in the rock face with strength enough for 300 troops to climb the fort!

Located on a hilltop, the  Sinhagad Fort also offers amazing views of Pune city. It is also favoured by trekkers as the fort is located at a height of 700m and has an interesting climb which is great for exploration. Don’t forget to have some delicious Pithla Bhakri and refreshing Buttermilk which are sold by the roadside vendors while visiting this majestic fort.
