One of the more prettier water bodies in the Lahaul-Spiti Valley, Chandra taal is located at a height of 4300 m above the sea level, with the mighty Himalayas posing as its backdrop. The word ‘Chandrataal’ can be translated to mean ‘Moon lake’. It gets its name from the fact that the lake is crescent shaped like a moon. The lake changes colour reflecting the colour of the sky, with the Chandra Bhaga mountain ranges forming the perfect backdrop. One of the interesting facts about the lake is that there is no visible source of this lake, which means there must be an underground source.

It usually is quite a barren territory, devoid of any human settlement, hence it makes for an excellent trekking and camping spot in the Lahaul and Spiti valley. Chandrataal usually acts as a base for various trekking tours, the most famous being the trek to Kunzum Pass and Batal. There are a number of trails around the area. Apart from these activities there isn’t much you can do here. Hence you can start your day exploring the various trails around the lake and the meadows by the lakeside makes for an ideal camping spot.

As far as eating and staying are concerned, Chandrataal has very few options. There are a number of guesthouses and small dhaba-like eateries in the Kunzum and Batal area. The eateries in Chandrataal mainly serve simple Tibetan fare. The climate here remains very cold throughout the year, so don’t forget to pack some heavy woolens, no matter what time of the year you plan your break. The place is best visited during the peak summer months. The surrounding meadows are carpeted with blooming wildflowers. During winters, the area is cut off and the lake remains frozen. However if you plan to visit during this time, make sure you hire a local driver who knows the routes and can handle mechanical problems, as no service centres operate during this time.
