One of the most beautiful places in northeast India, a vacation in Gangtok is about scenic views, trekking trails, delicious food and of course, monasteries. The following itinerary will help you to plan your trip.

Day 1

Step out of your hotel after breakfast. Morning is the perfect time to go to Do-drul Chorten, which is 5 km from the Gangtok and is one of the most popular tourist spots in the place. The biggest and most important stupa in Sikkim, this place will wake up your soul. Soak in the spirituality, enhanced by the scenic surrounding of the place, and spend some hours in this religious site. Take the surrounding trekking trails and explore the place.

Going to Gangtok calls for a complete tour of all its beautiful spots but first go for the Ropeway Cable Car ride and witness a panoramic view of Gangtok. Choose your convenient point from Tashiling, Namnang or Deorali to start the ride.

Have lunch at Cafe Culture or at Snow Lion Restaurant and start your tour again. Visit the famous Teesta river and go for white river rafting.

On the way back visit the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology and learn more about Tibetan people and their rich culture. Find out about the timings and entry fee of Namgyal Institute of Tibetology. By the time you come back from the institute, it will be already evening. Have dinner at your hotel and retire early for the night.

Day 2

Start the second day with a trip to the famous Tsongmo Lake. Pack lunch as visiting it is going to take time. Commuting to this place will take more than 3 hours but once you reach there you will fall in love with the place. An inner line permit is required, from the police, either through the tourism department or from your travel agent, for Indians to visit this place. Foreign nationals need a special permission to visit Tsongmo Lake.

During the winter months the lake remains frozen and in summer you will see many varieties of floras surrounding it. Experience yak ride and explore the region. Have your packed lunch (if you haven’t had it) and continue your tour of the place. After lunch, you can go to the Shiva temple, located near the lake and experience spirituality as well as scenic beauty.

It will be lunch-time when you reach Gangtok. Go to Bakers Cafe or any other restaurant in Gangtok and head out for Enchey Monastery. Rejuvenate your soul after a prayer in this monastery and make sure you witness Kanchendzonga peak, from this place.

Come evening and its time to hit the dance floor. X’cape is one of the popular nightclubs of Gangtok and you will see mostly youngsters there. Have dinner at your hotel, before ending the day or you can have it at X’cape and dance through the night.

Day 3

Begin the day with a trip to Rumtek Monastery, which is around 25 km from Gangtok. Spend your morning there, in the midst of spirituality and serenity. One of the largest monastery in the state, it will take you quite a few hours to explore the whole place.

From this monastery, travel to Banjhakri Falls and experience the mesmerising beauty of the falls. With foaming white of crystal clear water descending to the ground, you will have a sight nowhere to be found on earth.

Have lunch on your way back to Gangtok. This time try for authentic Sikkimese food. You will find it in many restaurants in Gangtok ( you can have it at Taste of Tibet).

After lunch, head out for shopping. With knick-knacks, handloom products and Tibetan souvenirs to choose from, you will need more time than you have. Some of the markets are Old market, New market and Lal market. Try the Sikkim Handicraft and Handloom Emporium, if you are looking for traditional Sikkimese and Tibetan products.

By the time you are done with your shopping, it will be already evening. After a delicious dinner in your hotel, you can pack for the next day’s trip back to your home.
