Nauchandi Mela is held every year in Meerut for a month, starting on the second Sunday after Holi. This year the Mela is from 7th April to 7th May. During the month of the fair the city hums with activity as thousands of people (around 50,000 a day) from all over the country come here to participate. Earlier the fair was organised by the landlords, but now it is done by the local Municipal Corporation.

The Mela started in 1672 as a one-day affair, mainly for cattle traders. It figured during 1857, the first war of Indian independence when Nana Saheb, one of the prominent figures of the revolt, came here to motivate the locals to raise arms against the British. Thus, except 1858, the fair has been held here regularly. Nauchandi Mela is a true symbol of communal harmony, reflected in the number of people coming here from all corners of India, barring religion, caste, creed etc. The significance of the Mela is even more enhanced as the Dargah of Muslim saint Bala Mian and Nauchandi Temple are located close enough.

A plethora of activities form a part of this festival including a number of stalls, religious rituals, artistic, commercial and rustic merriment. The Mela is a perfect place to buy exotic handicrafts of Uttar Pradesh including the delicate chikankari work of Lucknow, gorgeous silk sarees of Varanasi, famous glassware from Firozabad, world-class leather good from Kanpur along with the others. The mela is a delight for foodies too, given the diverse food stalls here, serving yummy dishes.
