ABOUT Tower of Silence
The name ' Tower of Silence' was coined by a Britisher named Robert Murphy in 1832. Even though this place in Mumbai is not open for public, you can still catch a glimpse of it from the Hanging Gardens. A sacred resting place for the Parsis, it is used for offering the dead ones to the scavengers. They do so as they believe that the dead body is unclean and a potential pollutant, so it should be disposed as safely as possible.
You can only view the place from Hanging Garden. To reach Hanging Garden, you need to get down at ‘Charni Road’ station, which is the 3rd station from south of western railway. Take a taxi from here, which will take about 15 to 20 minutes to reach.
