Best time to visit dehradun

Blessed with astounding natural beauty, Doon Valley is one of the oldest cities in India. Known for its temples, educational centers, culture and scenic views, Dehradun is a crowd puller. The growing capital city of Uttarakhand, is a symbol for adventure, beauty, serenity and culture.
Dehradun is situated between the two most important rivers in India, Yamuna and Ganga. This bustling town is home to the Indian Militiary Academy and the Forest Research Institute. Dehradun is often touted as the "Gateway to Mussoorie", owing to its close proximity to the spellbinding hill station. A popular summer retreat, Dehradun is charming to say the least. With a fascinating history related to the Mahabharata, Dehradun has found a special mention in Hindu mythology and epics. Dehradun finds a place of mention in the Skanda Purana as Kedar Khand--Lord Shiva's abode. It is believed to be one of the oldest cities in India, one where Lord Rama and his brother Lakshman served penance for killing Ravana.

The city is home to some of the finest educational institutes in country, including the Doon School, Welham School and the prestigious Indian Military Academy (IMA). There are many places of tourist interest as well as religious prominence in Dehradun. The most famous one is the Tapkeshwar Mahadev Temple, whose name comes from the continuously falling water droplets on the Shivling placed in the temple. There is a Tibetan temple on Rajpur Road which attracts many pilgrims as well as tourists. Another must-visit place is the Malsi Deer Park, where you can enjoy a nice picnic with family and friends. The city also plays host to a number of cultural fairs such as the Jhanda Fair, Tapkeshwar Fair, Bissu Fair and Mahasu Devta Fair.

Commercial yet raw, the city station has retained its natural essence and refreshing beauty. Blessed with nature's bounty, Dehradun is surrounded by the Shivalik Hills to the north, River Yamuna to the west and River Ganga to the east. It is, in all rights, your first contact with the mountains! A trip to Dehradun will rejuvenate your mind, body and soul. The old world charm, colonial structures, winding lanes and generous hospitality will warm your heart.
