This small town near the Western Ghats has rightly been dubbed as the "Gateway to Kerala". Located between the area that divides Kerala and Tamil Nadu, it offers the best of both worlds and cultures. Soak yourself in the history of age-old communities, temples and forts and take home memories of an unforgettable vacation.
Tucked in the scenic Palakkad (Palghat) Gap in the Western Ghats, Palakkad (Palghat) stands as a conduit between Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Though located within the official boundaries of Kerala, the more prominent local language here is Tamil as against Malayalam, pointing towards a confluence of cultures. Visit the 15th Century Kalpathy Agraharam to understand the Tamil Brahmin community in Palakkad. Or understand the origins of the Jain religion in Kerala at the Jain Temple in Jainimedu. Experience the region's tryst with a princely history at Tipu Sultan's Fort, built by his father, Hyder Ali in 1766. Explore the serene Malampuzha Dam and the surrounding lush gardens or just take a laid back boat ride on the reservoir.

This quiet town is the capital of Palakkad District — Kerala’s rice bowl and the gateway between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. A natural depression in the Western Ghats — the famous Palghat Gap — makes Palakkad perennially windy. Like a town that would rather be a village, it makes way for chariots during festivals and beams gloriously when the sunlight falls on its golden paddy fields. Like a village that wants to be a town, it loves airconditioned restaurants and amusement parks. There are the mesmerising beats of the panchavadyam sharing sound waves with film songs. Palakkad is home to a considerable number of Tamil Brahmins who settled here over centuries in agraharams, villages that preserve their unique way of life. They assimilated Kerala influences to produce a delicious cuisine. The many kaavus sprinkling the countryside actually hold much of the Palakkad (Palghat) experience.
