Built on November 19th in 1801 by Laxman Vithu and Deubai Patil, the temple is shrine to Lord Ganesha. Donations of about 100-150 million (INR) every year, making it the richest temple in Mumbai, underlie its evolution from a small place of worship to the magnificent, opulent temple it is today. Within the temple is a small mandap (hall) which contains the shrine of Siddhi Vinayak (Ganesh who grants your wish). When you enter the sanctum, take a close look at the heavy, wooden doors; they are carved with the images of Ashtavinayak (the eight manifestations of Ganesh). Lord Ganesha’s statue resides in the sanctum and the deities you see on both sides of Lord Ganesha are Riddhi and Siddhi, who stand for fulfillment, holiness, wealth and prosperity. During Ganesh Chaturthi, the temple takes on an added layer of opulence and magnificence, visited as it is by lakhs of devotees of all faiths. It isn’t a wonder that even on a daily basis, the temple is filled with people seeking blessings and offering prayers including politicians and Indian film industry celebrities, as you will discover on your visit.
Dedicated to Lord Ganesha, Shree Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai attracts hundreds of devotees each day. The glory of the temple is mostly due to the visits paid by the politicians and film stars in the city. The temple receives millions of rupees each year as donations, making it the richest temple in Mumbai.

Established in 1801 by Laxman Vithu and Deubai Patil, Shree Siddhivinayak Temple began as a humble shrine. With time and money, the present shape of a grand 6-storyed structure came into being. Since Deubai was childless, she wanted to set up a Ganesh temple where the lord would grant children to childless couples. Siddhivinayak is hence well known as Navasacha Ganapati (Ganapati who grants wishes when asked with a pure heart).

The idol of Ganesha was consecrated by Ramakrishna Jambhekar Maharaj who, on instructions from his guru, buried two divine idols in front of the main Ganesh idol. As predicted by him, two decades later, a Mandar tree grew from that spot bearing a swayambhu (self-arising) image of Ganesha.
The main shrine of Siddhi Vinayak is placed in a small mandap. Riddhi and Siddhi are on his either sides, symbolizing fulfillment, holiness, wealth and prosperity. Sometime in 1952, a Hanuman Temple was built into the temple complex. Inspired from the Ambernath Temple, the Shree  Siddhivinayak Temple is a unique 6-storeyed multi-angular temple with a central gold-plated dome. The main stones used were pink granite and marble.
