about vadodara

Popularly called Baroda, this is Gujarat’s third most populous city after Ahmedabad and Surat and is acknowledged as the cultural capital of Gujarat. This distinction is largely due to Sayajirao Gaekwad III, a visionary ruler of Baroda state in the late 19th century.

Baroda zaps one with its abundant tourist traps. The UNESCO World Heritage site at Pavagadh-Champaner has a rich nostalgic appeal of the medieval era city and the mosques there captivate the senses. Amongst numerous other irresistible attractions dotting this fabulous city, a couple of other not to be missed spots are the famous Pavagadh Kalika Mandir and the priceless art collection at the Fateh Singh Museum and Laxmi Vilas Palace. Sayaji Baug is another important attraction which is the favourite picnic spot for the locals. The jewel of Sayaji Baug, though, is the Baroda Museum and Picture Gallery. Its treasures include an Egyptian mummy, the skeleton of a 71- foot blue whale that floundered up the Gulf of Khambat in 1944, and paintings by European masters.

The Gaekwad rulers also built the Pratap Vilas Palace, since occupied by the Railway Staff College, and the now abandoned Nazar Baug Palace. Nazar Baug is in the walled city area, which could at one time be reached only by passing through one of Vadodara’s four gates: the Champaner Darwaza, Gendigate, Panigate and Lehripura Darwaza. The Mandvi Gate is now an ornamental traffic roundabout.

It is easy to spend an hour or two prowling through the little lanes of the Old City, stumbling upon instrument repair shops, fabric sellers and Amul milk bars. Tambekar Wada is a three-storeyed wooden haveli in the area decorated with vivid paintings of battle scenes and mythological takes. The Nyayamandir Court is nearby as is the Sursagar Lake with a gigantic statue of Shiva rising from the middle.
