We all know that Mysore is famous for its magnificent palaces and monuments depicting the rich heritage and the rustic charm of the city, but what makes it even better is the places around it, don’t you think? Well, all of these places are not very far and are waiting for you to explore them. Just read on to know what these places have for you.

  • Srirangapatnam

At a distance of 14 kilometres from the city, Srirangapatna is a historic, religious and cultural hub situated on the Bangalore-Mysore Highway. This history rich town is an island surrounded by the river Kaveri. The capital city during the reign of Warrior-Kings Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan, this place houses a plethora of tourist attractions including a fort, Daria Daulat Bagh (Summer Palace), a museum showcasing paintings, sketches and coins, Masjid-E-Ala or Jamia Masjid, Balmuri falls, Gumbaz (Mausoleum of Tipu Sultan), Colonel Bailey’s Dungeon and many famous temples. Even though this place can be reached in around half an hour from Mysore and can be explored within a day, it still has a few accommodation options which are not excessively luxurious, though they are clean, hygienic and provide all the basic facilities.

  • Ooty

This popular hill station is at a distance of 125 kilometres from the city which is around 3 hours journey. Ooty, also called Udhagamandalam, whose Anglicized name then came to be known as Ootacamund, was first referred to as the Queen of hill stations by the British, given its enchanting beauty and lovely deep valleys. Standing amidst the Nilgiri mountain ranges, Ooty has a landscape marked by tea gardens, eucalyptus trees and a dense vegetation. The famous Kurunji flower, which blooms once in every 12 years gives the slopes of the Nilgiri mountains a bluish tinge. This town is famous for its museums, lakes, Doddabetta Peak, Rose Gardens, various temples and churches and many adventure activities.

Other tourist places near Mysore are Gomatagiri (18 kilometres away), Melukote (55 kilometres away), Nagamangala (80 kilometres away), Sivasamudram (80 kilometres away) and Talkad (45 kilometres away).
