Once a small place lost in a jungle, Bikaner was established by Rao Bika, the second son of Rao Jodha, who had established Jodhpur. Once he realized that he would have no claim to his father’s kingdom, he left his lands and established his own dominion in what was earlier Jangladesh. The city came to be known Bikaner after its founder and the name means the residence of Rao Bika.

With time, Bikaner prospered due to its favourable location on the trade route between
Gujarat port and central Asia. With the turns of time Bikaner changed hand from ruler to ruler, once becoming a Mughal Province and finally being a British subject. All the emperors the city saw gave the cityscape some gift in the form of decorative temples or magnificent additions to its majestic forts, which make Bikaner a delight for travellers today.

Today when you visit Bikaner, you will be completely intrigued. The city continues to lovingly preserve its character, despite the presence of modernity all around. One second you may see a luxurious car making its way down the wide roads and then again, you are totally likely to find camels drawing carts in a narrow lane which still breathes in its old world charm, all at a few minutes distance. Welcoming hordes of curious travellers every season, the city has gradually mastered the heart of comforting hospitality. Get zapped by the colourful celebrations or gulp down your dose of history- make the most of your holiday in the Camel Country!
