The history of Chikmagalur is dates back to the medieval era. This quaint and peaceful little town in south-western part of Karnataka is engaged with numerous legends. One of such tales is that the city was given as a dowry to the younger daughter of the historical figure Rukmangada, the chief of Sakrepatna. Hence, the name ‘Chikmagalur’ which means ‘town of the younger daughter’ in native Kannada language. Chikmagalur is considered to be a place which originated during the early reign of the Hoysalas, who ruled the southern part of India for over two centuries. Later, the region fell into the hands of Hyder Ali and inherited onto his son Tipu Sultan, the rulers of Mysore. A quick glance through the following points will brief you about the history of the town:

  • Another part of the town was bestowed on the elder daughter is known as Hiremagalur, like Chikmagalur to the younger one. However, some old inscriptions reveals that these two places were previously known as Kiriya-muguli and Piriya-muguli.
  • The first coffee plantation took place at Chikmagalur. Baba Budan Giri, brought it from West Asia, whose shrine is on top of the hills in that region. Back in 1670 the Muslim saint, Baba Budan brought coffee seeds from Yemen while on his pilgrimage to Mecca.

The headquarters of the district is situated on a valley to the south of the Baba-Budan hill range. The town today is a major centre of education, trade and commerce. The salubrious climate and has venerated monuments in the town attracts tourists of all kinds, all year round.

The harmonious environment of the place is depicted in the temples of all religions here.
