Located in the Gharwal region of Uttarakhand, the town of Joshimath gets its name from the Sanskrit word ‘Jyotirmath’, which means the place of Jyotirlinga of Shiva. A quaint little town nestled amidst the mighty Himalayas, it forms one of the four dhams of Uttarakhand and is also the junction point for people visiting Auli (one of the best skiing spots in India).

The town of Joshimath forms a base for various tourist attractions including Badrinath, Hemkund Sahib, Vishnu Prayag, Valley of Flowers and Auli, other than that it also has its own charm, which is adequately recycled in its natural beauty and religious importance. During winters, the Badrinath Temple is closed, and that is when Lord Badrinath is kept in the Narsingh temple. During this time, devotees throng to worship at the Narsingh Temple at Joshimath. The distinctive feature of the deity is that its left wrist is very thin and is getting thinner by the day. A legend goes about this wrist, according to which the day the wrist separates from the arm, the route to Badrinath would get closed permanently by a major landslide.
