Thanjavur, more popularly known as Tanjore has witnessed the reign of many a rulers from time to time. There were rulers after rulers. From being a Pallava Empire to falling under the Pandya reign and then the coming of the Cholas before the Nayaks and the Marathas, Tanjore has been the centre of a cultural metamorphosis.

Under the Chola rule, Tanjore grew in glory and art and culture was a focal point of development. You can clearly see these reflections of the splendour in the Big Temple or Brihadeeswarar Temple built by Raja Raja Chola I. Culture and Art was adopted like a way of life and celebrated to no end. Remnants of this still stand tall in the many architectural masterpieces of Tanjore.

Then in the 17th century came the Marathas who further enhanced the tradition of practicing art and culture here. For the curious minds, a massive collection of the Maratha Ruler Serfoji II is preserved at the Saraswati Library.

As art and culture grew the skilled artists of Tanjore only moved beyond the architectural masterstrokes into the performing arts. Tanjore is the birthplace of Carnatic music and Bharatanatyam. Hence even if agriculture has been a predominant occupation here, there is no dearth of local craftsmen and artists involved in Tanjore paintings, weaving famous Tanjore silks and other arts and handicrafts. The temples, the paintings, the crafts and the music - it would be only right to say that Tanjore has a history of artistic culture. Know more about it with some splendid places in Tanjore tourism.
