Dazzling with sloping mountains, clear blue rivers and green meadows, the picturesque beauty of Manali is breathtaking. A popular hill station, Manali has been a thriving summer retreat since time immemorial.

Shrouded in myths and legends, the town has an interesting historical past. For curious history buffs, here is a little insight into Manali’s being.

 

  • Into the past

    As believed by Hindu mythology, Manali was the abode of the lawgiver, Manu. Manu and other Gods were saved by the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu, a fish named Matsya. Warned by Matsya of an impending flood, Lord Manu and others were directed to dry grounds. The dry grounds being the beautiful land of Manali.

     

  • Journey to the present

    The hill station truly began its journey as a famous town in the erstwhile British era. Touted as a rejuvenating summer retreat, the hilly abode was quite popular with English officials. Be it the refreshing greenery, abundant apple orchards or trout fishing, Manali enchanted all by its pristine natural beauty.

     

  • Present

    Modern Manali still upholds its old world charm with the region divided into two, Old Manali and New Manali. Old Manali, a favourite amongst backpackers and wanderers is quiet and peaceful with little cafes and tea stalls. New Manali, on the other hand, is more visited and a tad bit crowded with major shopping hubs, hotels and high end restaurants.
